A Floating Room
This project was an entry to a competition that called for a floating hotel room, 5x5 m (around 250 sf).
The geometry of the ‘acorn’ is naturally buoyant, and having one of its four sides fully glazed allows for an uninterrupted view towards the surrounding lake and sky.
A Floating Room- Exploded Diagram
The building materials were carefully selected and their weights were calculated to ensure that the room would safely float.
The exploded diagram shows the main structure of the Acorn, made of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), the waterproof sheathing, the bamboo flooring, and the lightweight cellular concrete cladding that can easily take the desired shape at approximately 1/18th the density of regular concrete.
